Hiding Tells

Do you ever have that itch? The itch to wager, to head to the closest gambling house, to discover a good stakes casino game of Texas hold'em, to sit at a Black jack table for hours on end. I like that itch. And I really like to scratch it.

I also love to watch men and women bet. No two poker faces seem equal. When I bet I like to believe I put on a poker face that is impassable. Except I know I have specific mannerisms. For one, the only time I smoke cigarettes is when I bet on poker or Pontoon. And then I chain smoke. Except I smoke regardless of whether I am succeeding or losing, no matter whether I have a great hand or bad.

I once wagered in the weekly poker game. The casino game was often 5 card draw. There was a man who played with us each week who always wore a hat. When he was given a beneficial hand, subconsciously, he would begin touching and betting with his hat. Pointless to say, he by no means won.

The very best poker player I ever saw was a guy who manufactured a lot more movements and signals at a poker table than anyone I had ever seen. He was flawless in the way he dressed. Usually an pricey suit and tie, footwear shined and nails manicured. He was meticulous in this manner. And he was generally brushing his pant leg or rubbings his hands or stacking his chips in tidy little piles.

I use to study him for long periods of time. I'd tried to see if I could spot his tell. Picking fuzz off his shirt- did this mean he was bluffing? Stacking his chips in a very short pile - did this mean he had a great hand?

Many years later I ran into him in a very bar in Philly and we had a beverage. I asked him if he were aware of all those motions he made or if they had been unconscious. He told me that each and every individual thing he did at a poker table was deliberate. He said that everybody is constantly checking out everybody else's poker face. They're attempting to detect the the tell.

So his method was to provide them lots to think about. His thinking was if they were thinking about him choosing a piece of lint off his coat and what it meant they positive were not pondering about their cards.

His program was distraction. And it worked for him. Never give up a technique that works for you.
